Sequins are for life, not just for Christmas: how to wear your party dress all year round

Happy new year, everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve posted, partly because I’ve been so deep into a Christmas food and drink coma it felt like I was never coming out of it.

But Bounty Celebrations and half drunk bottles of Baileys aren’t the only thing left over at this time of year. Hands up if, like me, you stocked up on sequins that you’ll leave hanging in the wardrobe until next December. Well guess what, ladies – *drum roll please*… you can wear sequins all year round without looking like a Christmas cracker.

Go all out!

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Personally, I believe the more the better. Wearing sequins on sequins is about as out there as it gets, so why not just do it? The colours in this set are particularly summery, with the tropical turquoise and hot pink. A little sequin dress is one of my summer holiday essentials and this one is a cracker. Can’t wait til summer? Wear your dress under a faux fur with chunky tights and knee-high boots for cosy daytime glam.

Layer it up

The easiest way to play down a sequin dress? Layer it over a t shirt or lightweight jumper. Because this is me we are talking about then obviously my ‘subtle jumper’ is anything but, with its tangerine hue and flute sleeves, but focusing on a neutral palette of black or white will keep your sequin outfit simple. You can layer up your accessories, too. I’ve thrown a belt over this dress to keep it casual, and my knee-high boots are a daytime alternative to heels.

Blend it in

Sequins? What sequins? If you feel self-conscious about your OTT look then it will look out of place (sorry ’bout it), but if you embrace it then there is no reason you can’t wear sparkles as part of a casual daytime look. My face here says: “I defy you to tell me this outfit doesn’t work for a shopping trip on the high street of my local small town”. #liesitellmyself #restingbitchfaceftw

Dress it down

One of my favourite looks ever is a sequin skirt with a t shirt and trainers – I just love the juxtaposition of glamour and simplicity. Another winner is a sequin dress with a biker jacket thrown haphazardly over the top and some cowboy boots, or you could team an embellished jumper with black skinnies. Ask yourself: how would I wear this item if it wasn’t covered in sequins? Then wear it that way – sorted.

Pick your statement piece

I’m certainly no stranger to daytime sequins, but if you are a beginner looking to make a statement then the best advice I can give is to pick one ‘wow’ piece and find different ways to dress it up or down. This sequin tassel skirt undoubtedly fits the ‘wow’ category and would be a showstopper on a night out. However, dressed down with an oversized scarf and trainers I think it looks pretty cool too.

How are you going to wear sequins in 2019?
