Oh hello yellow ball in the sky: it’s been a while since we’ve seen you! I don’t know about where you are but Edinburgh has been a SCORCHER the past week. To say it’s about time is an understatement.
The thing about summer creeping up out of nowhere though is that overnight you can find yourself with nothing to wear. Not to worry, Auntie Alice is going to talk you through one of summer’s hottest trends: yellow.
Don’t be Clueless: dress like Cher
I think we all coveted 90s icon Cher from Clueless’s wardrobe – both the contents and the actual wardrobe! I’ve seen Cher’s famous yellow check adorning several pieces on the High Street lately, but this fabulous co ord has to be my favourite.
What I really love about this crop top and flared trouser set is that aside from its Clueless credentials, there’s major Vivenne Westwood feels about this look. To really play up on this, I’ve worn my treasured Vivenne Westwood pearl choker.
So you think you can’t pull off flares? Think again! I’ve written a few times about why this trouser shape is really flattering on all shapes and I stand by this. If you’re a flares newbie then maybe mustard check kickflares are a bit of a bold move but hey, why not throw yourself in at the deep end? But if you are a bit more cautious (fair play tbh) then this co ord could be mixed and matched to create a smorgasbord of looks all summer long.
Speaking of bold looks, you’re probably thinking: “as cute as this outfit is Alice, surely it’s a bit much for day to day?” Well, my friend, I would disagree. Teamed with a denim jacket, some ankle boots and a satchel bag this yellow co ord can definitely be worn casually. OK, I’m not going to be doing the housework in it but I love this look for brunch with the gyals (did I just write ‘gyals’?! Yes, yes I did).
One of the reasons I really love yellow is that it’s a versatile colour for a variety of occasions. Better yet, it suits most skin tones. Mustard looks good on pretty much everyone (true story), while those of you who can rock a tan will look amazing in brighter, almost neon hues. I personally love how yellow looks contrasted against my hair, but if you have blonde or dark hair you’ll deffo rock it too. Promise.
Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise
So we’ve covered yellow daytime summer fashion, but how about nighttime? If you’ve got a cracking tan then I 100% recommend going for a slinky little bright yellow number (thank me later). But as I am sans tan I thought I’d show you a simpler way to work yellow into your summer wardrobe: accessories.
One of the great things about this shade is its ability to work with a range of colours. If you’re looking for something ‘out there’ then team with other primary colours, as I’ve done with this red coat. Blue Insta-worthy wall is optional.
Alternatively, yellow accessories look amazing teamed with more neutral pieces. Yellow high heels, wedges and chunky sunshine-hued ankle boots would be fabulous on a night out.
I picked up this white playsuit in a boutique in New York (#iamcarriebradshaw) and it has been one of my summer wardrobe favourites ever since. While a playsuit like this speaks for itself with its ruffle detail and slight Marilyn in The Seven Year Itch vibes, for me it’s always needed something (some boobs? Stop it, Alice).
And this is where sunshine-hued accessories come into their own. This season’s tassel earrings look especially striking in yellow and, believe it or not, this mustard handbag is one of my most used items in my wardrobe. I told you yellow was versatile!
On the note of shades, don’t be afraid to mix and match. Whatever your palette, yellow accessories will definitely add a touch of summer to your evening look.
Whether your style is more casual or you’re a fan of full-on glam, have fun experimenting with summer’s hottest trend: yellow!
