Lots of people recently have asked me for tips on how to pose for outfit photos. It’s not easy, especially when taking street style photos in public – I still feel self conscious! But the truth is, you just have to go for it. The more uncomfortable you are, the more awkward you’ll look in photos.
Spoiler: if you’ve followed me on Instagram for long you’ll know that I have a few key poses that I opt for. If you find something that works then keep doing it, right? Here’s what I’ve learned through blogging about how to pose for outfit photos.
Perfect your ‘look’
You know the one, that sultry, straight down the camera stare bloggers are famous for. Tyra Banks calls it the ‘smize’ – you’ve got to smile, but with your eyes. Chances are you do it all the time in your selfies, it’s just finding the confidence to do it around other people that’s the tricky part. Be sure to get lots of photos. Even Cara Delevingne doesn’t nail it in the first shot. Well, I’m pretty sure she doesn’t.
It all comes down to confidence. We’re so used to scrutinising ourselves in photos but stop focusing on your flaws and start looking at what you are rocking. You’ve got great eyes? Flirt with that camera, girl! Lovely hair? Play with it in photos. Finding your ‘thing’ and owning it will majorly improve your outfit photos.
… Or choose to smile
I often choose to defy the standard blogger look and opt for a huge smile instead. If you feel uncomfortable posing for photos then it’s a great place to start – tell yourself you’re having loads of fun, rock your biggest cheeser and you’ll start to relax. Whether you prefer a sassy face or a happy smile, find the look that makes you most comfortable.
Play with your outfit
If I wear a hat I’ll always hold it. If you’re struggling to feel confident posing, find elements of your outfit to focus on. If you’ve got a big collar you could pop it up or hold the edges. If you have a gorgeous bag you want to show off, why not get a photo of you rummaging inside it? Having something to focus on can make posing much less awkward!
Remember when you’re taking outfit photos your goal is to showcase the outfit. Focus on making your clothes look good and the rest will take care of itself.
Try looking behind you
Glancing behind you or looking over your shoulder gives people a chance to see any great back detail to your outfit. In case you hadn’t noticed I love an embellished jacket so this move is a favourite of mine!
Standing straight-on in a photo is always a bit awkward. Take time experimenting with different angles and poses until you find ‘the one’ that really shows off your outfit.
Don’t be stagnant – walking can create some gorgeous shots! I especially like this when wearing flares. Movement can be great for your hair (think Beyonce hair blowing in the wind), and also makes the photos look less ‘forced’.
The most important thing is to have fun! Your followers are here to get to know you and see what you’re up to, so never feel afraid to be yourself.
