Blogger Twenty-Something City with Vintage updo for Christmas hair inspiration

Christmas updo inspiration from Manchester’s Vintage Beauty Parlour

Do you ever find yourself stuck in a hair rut? I know I do. At the moment I’m desperately trying to wash my hair less frequently, which means I need to get creative to keep my hair looking great.

Therefore I was delighted to be invited down to The Vintage Beauty Parlour for a festive updo masterclass. The salon is very conveniently at the bottom of my road (I know right?!) and I’ve wanted to pop in ever since I moved to Manchester.

The Vintage Beauty Parlour is owned by the lovely Bethany Jane Davies, a hair and make-up artist who specialises in retro looks. While many vintage ‘dos take hours to set and style, Bethany focused on three styles that we could easily recreate at home before a Christmas party.

First up we were taught how to do a Bridget Bardot-style beehive. I love Bridget’s famous ‘do – that perfect mix of glamour whilst remaining ‘undone’. Bethany talked us through the look step-by-step, and provided us with all the necessary tools.

I’ve been trying my entire life to get the perfect beehive. The key? Pre-curling, back combing, then using a beehive insert. Expect to see many more beehives in my hair repertoire!

Can we take a moment to appreciate how beautiful the salon is?! The decor is so gorgeous. I wish it was my bedroom!

Back to hair, and my favourite look of the evening had to be the simple chignon. This wrapped hairstyle looks really polished but is so simple to do- essentially it’s a low ponytail wrapped round itself then pinned into place. Even someone who’s a disaster at styling hair like me can create this updo.

Bethany provided us with a variety of accessories to finish our styles. I love the way a beret absolutely makes this look! Berets are my new favourite this winter, and this combo of a hat and an updo is perfect for days when I can’t be bothered washing my hair. Which is every day, by the way.

Last up we created a 1960s-inspired bun. This style felt the most ‘vintage’, especially when paired with a headscarf.

The best thing about all three styles is that I would actually wear them. I was a little concerned the looks would be too polished for me, or too time-consuming for every day, but actually all three looks were totally doable.

If you fancy trying a vintage masterclass- either for hair or make-up- then Bethany is your lady. The Vintage Beauty Parlour also offers styling appointments, if you’d rather a professional create your vintage look.

This festive season, why not try a retro updo? I can’t wait to wear these looks again.

The Vintage Beauty Parlour can be found in Chorlton, Manchester. If you do pay it a visit, pop round and say hi!

I was invited to come visit the salon. However, all views are my own.
