Right ladies, it’s time we talk about the ‘c’ word – confidence.
It always surprises me how many of you wonderful people feel too shy to wear the clothes you love. Clothes are a method of self-expression and a chance to feel like ‘you’. Dressing up should be as fun as it was as a child, rummaging through your fancy dress costumes.
And I cannot stress enough- money doesn’t guarantee style, but confidence does.
I wore this ensemble to meet a blogger friend to go for lunch. She said to me, “that coat is so cool but I’d never have the confidence to wear it”. I’ll be honest, it had never even occurred to me that this was a ‘bold’ look because for me this is a pretty standard get up.
Now imma be real witch’all- these days as I work from home I spend the vast majority of my time wrapped in my dressing gown, despite what my Instagram may suggest. But when I go out, I want to feel like I’m looking great.
I don’t feel comfortable being in public in jeans and a jumper with no make up on, and I get really self-conscious. Seriously! The lady with the orange hair and a penchant for outlandish outerwear gets paranoid that everyone is staring at her when she’s not wearing make-up. Not if I’m just running to the corner shop (because who has time to faff about with false eyelashes when you have a hummus-buying emergency?), but go down Market Street on a Saturday au natural? Not gonna happen.
What I’m saying is, those bloggers or Instagrammers you idolise? Well, they get style anxiety too.
As a blogger I’m pretty used to people staring at me as I strike a pose <breaks out Madonna Vogue dance moves> and when I’m looking fly it doesn’t bother me at all. I feel like people are staring at me because I’m inviting them to and (hopefully) they’re looking at me and thinking, ‘she’s a stylish lady’.
Here are the things that always give me style confidence-
- Wearing my latest bargain find, like this coat from Shein (£26 people! Twenty-freaking-six pounds)
- Rocking a lipstick that matches my outfit, and finishing the look with some good false eyelashes
- Opting for something that highlights the parts of my figure I like – these spray-on skinnies coupled with a heeled boot help to lift and highlight my, ahem, assets
The only difference between the bloggers whose style you covet and you is confidence. Find what works for you and just bloody go for it.
You’re rocking it, ladies!
