Shop Scottish: A visit to SDX Fashion

What if I told you you could find unique, handmade, limited edition fashion for an affordable price, available in Ocean Terminal?

Well you can, at the newly launched Scottish Design Exchange fashion loft! I took a trip to Leith to check it out.

What initially started as a pop-up concept store in summer 2015 is now one of the real hidden gems of Ocean Terminal. The ground floor of The Scottish Design Exchange houses amazing artwork and homewear from Edinburgh-based creatives. But it was what’s upstairs that really appealed to me.

Beautiful, handmade jewellery, gorgeous headwear and quirky fashion lovingly created by up-and-coming designers fills the airy loft space. The fashion section only launched in February, but already it’s become a must-visit for Edinburgh’s fashion lovers and bloggers.

Often, handmade fashion can be a little on the pricey side- understandable given the materials and man hours required, but not so great for fashionistas on a tight budget. However, the styles on offer here are really reasonable, with a statement top available for what you’d pay in Topshop.

Most of the designs on offer are tailored at women, but the menswear section is continuing to grow. The bold graphic tees on offer by Staunch, Hidden Stag and Native Tongue are a must-have.

As a not-for-profit business, The Scottish Design Exchange provides designers, artists and creatives the opportunity to get their amazing products out to the public, without the enormous costs involved in setting up shop.

The designers showcased alter regularly, and most pieces are limited edition. That means next time you’re in Ocean Terminal, you need to snap up your favourite styles quickly. Personally I’m lusting after this handcrafted crown. You know, because every queen needs a crown…

The Scottish Design Exchange is open 7 days. So next time you’re shopping for a party outfit, why not give the fashion loft a visit?
